What is the side effect of Sabah Snake Grass?

Sabah Snake Grass is also known as:
Scientific name : Clinacanthus Nutas
Chinese name   : Yu Xun Cao 优遁草
Local name        : Belalai Gajah and Gendis.

There are 2 Varieties of Snake Grass plant:-

1) Sabah Snake Grass
    Taste: tasteless, cooling.

    Efficacy: anti-cancer properties; 

Side effect: nausea, diarrhoea;
    Appearance: leaves are longer than Indian Snake Grass.

2) Indian Snake Grass

Taste: bitter, cooling.

    Efficacy: not sure of its anti-cancer property; 

    Side effect: backache;
    Appearance: leaves are more oval in shape as compared to Sabah Snake Grass.

According to some reports in the internet Sabah Snake Grass (SSG) has begun to gain recognition as an effective cure for certain kind of cancer. 

In recent years, internet and newspapers in Malaysia reported that some cancer patients had shown great improvement after drinking SSG juice.  Some said tumors had disappeared after 2 to 3 weeks of consumption.  In some advance stage, it took about 4 weeks for the tumours to subside.

In 2008, one newspaper in Malaysia reported that a 56 year old, Mr. Liu Lian Hui was diagnosed with stage 4 lymphatic cancer.  Doctor told he has only 3 months to live.  He has somehow come to know about the SSG.  He tried his luck with SSG.

He said that after all he had no other choice, so he drank the SSG juice. He said he blended the SSG with green apple and drank the juice every morning after bread-fast.  Within a few days, some tumours disappeared and after weeks he was informed by his oncologist that he was 96% cured! Today, Mr. Liew is still alive.

It was reported that a woman from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was suffering from breast and lung cancer, stage 4 cancer and had both breast removed.  She was very weak and was on drip as she could not eat. Her family member gave her SSG juice to drink.  After a number of days, she could eat.  She continued to drink SSG when she was discharged from hospital. After 28 days all tumours disappeared.

It was also mentioned in the website that a man who suffered 3^rd stage of lung cancer, had three tumours in the lung and had gone through 6 times of chemotherapy.  After taken two weeks of SSG, his tumours had reduced in size, the smaller ones reduced to 30 to 45%, while the bigger one reduced to 12%.

It was also reported that the SSG is cooling in nature and if taken too excessively may cause the following side effect:

Knee Pain;
Back pain;

Insomnia;
Cough;
Nausea;
Vomit;

Weakness in knees and legs etc.

How to Cook Sabah Snake Grass

            Sabah Snake Grass 30 gm (rinse with water first),
            galanga 1 pc, red dates 24 pcs;

Cook galanga and red dates for 30 minutes, then add sabah snake grass into the soup;

                         Cook for another 30 to 45 minutes;

                    Pour out the soup and it is ready to drink.

Some information in the internet suggest that Sabah Snake Grass should be grind together with green apple into juice. But there are people who took raw sabah snake grass find that they may experience nausea after drinking a few times and they may dislike “raw” tastes.

So we have consulted few Chinese physicians and asked them if sabah snake grass can be taken after cooking. They said that almost 99% of the Chinese herbs are taken after cooking, e.g. 半枝莲, 白花蛇舌草, 蒲公英, 金银花, 菊花等. They feel that Sabah Snake Grass is basically cooling in nature and not suitable for those who have “weak stomach” and should be taken after cooking.  Many said that celery should also be taken raw, but the nutritional value of cooked celery is still good.  Most of the cancer patients might have undergone chemotherapy and radiotherapy, their constitution might be weaken somehow, so it is better to take the Sabah Snake Grass after cooking.  They said that the longer the SSG is cooked, the less cooling they are.
